James completes successful first season as racing veteran |

Having got over the shock of hitting 40 and therefore becoming a veteran, our Director of Marketing and Business Development James Goward can look back at a successful summer racing campaign.

As a specialist time trialist racing for Team Scott Plasma, James competed in 44 races notching up 17 victories and fi nishing in the top five on 32 occasions in a season extending from March to October.

Highlights include a provisional 4th place overall in the veterans category in the seasonlong national time trial series sponsored by Rudy Project, which sees competitors racing on testing and often hilly ‘sporting’ courses across the country – three top fi ve fi nishes at these events helped with accumulating points late in the season. Back in September he achieved 7th place in his age category at the British Time Trial Championships held near Peterborough.

Commenting on his past season James said, “It’s true that life begins at 40 and I can certainly point to a pick-up in performance having reached that particular milestone back in May. I’m sure there is extra incentive to try and beat the younger riders”

Plans for next season include a serious assault on the Rudy Project series and with a full season racing as a veteran, a goal to achieve a top three medal placing come the end of next year in this competitive category.

“Work and family commitments mean the training I can fit in is very intense with every session needing to count. It hurts, but right now I’m enjoying a few weeks off the bike to ease the aches and pains that come with getting older!”
