To achieve this it's essential to make the assets work most effectively, given the client’s needs and attitude to risk, and in many cases a portfolio of stocks, shares and unit trusts is a major part of this. What most of my clients want is to know their investments are in safe hands, looked after by someone who will take care of all the paperwork, thus saving them any hassle, while producing a good return of income and capital growth. In my experience, discretionary investment management is invaluable in achieving this objective. The manager takes the decisions, lets the client know what's been done, and reports every six months with a full valuation and report on the previous half year's changes. The income flows through at regular intervals and the capital performance can be measured against the appropriate index. For most, the important thing is being there or thereabouts, not necessarily beating the index.”
